often require people to talk in a standardized codified language. 

When locals of any city feel that their local dialect is at risk of extinction, they 

can exaggerate some of the features to keep it alive and consciously turn to folklore as 
a source of national ideas, understanding folklore as a component of the cultural 
heritage that needs to be preserved and propagated. 

On the other hand, there are several compelling reasons to believe that local 

spoken language features are preserved. So, local residents of Pittsburgh consider their 
dialect associated with the working class. In addition, such words as yinz, dahntahn 
and jag off have become symbols of the city of Pittsburgh.
