Mode – mainly points to the flowering of trendy trends in clothing and behavior,
but is characterized by transience and variability.
Vogue – particular attention is paid to the apparent popularity among the broad
masses of the population and the fashion for accessories and outer decoration of the
outerwear. The lexeme contains the the seme of prevailing style of clothing.
Fad – a short-term fashion characterized by a volatility and fast switching of
interests to more popular objects.
Rage and Craze – lexemes which have a similar meaning with the word fad in
terms of transience, but they have a more intense impact on a wide range of people,
which provides an wholesale passion for certain fashionable trends.
Dernier cri – is sometimes used with the French particle le. In English, the
element emphasizes the element of extremism and the desire to stick to certain fashion
trends with particular enthusiasm (it is most frequently found in art and fashion on
clothing) [11].
It should be noted that the concept «Fashion» is verbalized also by derivatives
with the semantics of «fashion». One of the most common morphemes of English is
the suffix -er, which is still called «a suffix of the doer». It converts the words-actions
into the words that denote those people who perform these actions. Regarding the
fashion, it is worth giving the following examples: modeler – «a person who constructs
an object by assembling and modifying many separate models» (a person who creates
patterns of clothing); trendsetter – «a person who is continually monitoring the pulse
of What’s Next» (the tastemaker of the fashion). But the most popular lexeme is the
word designer – «one that creates clothes (for women)». In the modern sense, there is
no division into masters for the production of women’s or men’s clothing, and the
phrase fashion designer is defined as «a person who devices or executes designs,
especially one who creates forms, structures and patterns of clothes» [10]. The clothing
of fashion-designers is sold in their own stores, but usually their clothing is sold in
boutiques and department stores. One shouldn’t confuse the phrase fashion designer
and a costume designer which means «a person who designs costumes for a film or
stage production» [9].
There is also a lexeme fashioner in the sense of «tailor, dresser». It should be
noted that the difference between the lexemes fashion designer and fashioner is that
today the notion «a fashion designer» has become the equivalent of «a stylist» (a person
who creates fashionable clothes) and points to a specialist in the creation of clothing
and accessories of a higher level than the tailor.
The suffix -ist belongs to the same group of «suffixes of the doer». This suffix is
used in the nouns to designate professionals – adherents of the social direction.
According to the dictionary definitions, the lexeme fashionist, is understood as «a
maker, leader, specialist, follower of fashions» (a person who is a fashion legislator).
