creativity – the two main heroes of these plays combine a common motive – with the
help of lies, to ensure the full life of loved ones.
V. Vynnychenko in his play «Sin» used the word «sin» for the title, based on the
fact that most people see the whole range of possible crimes under this word, but under
the term «crime» – just a specific act. The main character of the play lieutenant colonel
– Stalynskyy is a typical policeman for whom only official affairs are in the first place,
for his cruelty and inhuman attitude to the prisoners he got the nickname «Cain» and
even – «Nefarious Spirit» [6, 495]. And one of the characteristics of Stalynskyy claims
that this is a really
wicked creature, because of blackmail, rape and manipulation of
human feelings are only the main ways of achieving his goals: «Give him your soul.
He needs to get into the soul like a spider. That's what he needs»[6, 495]. In addition,
Stalynskyy deliberately surrounds himself with weak-willed people to manipulate them
more easily. And one of these ones in the full sense of the «subordinates» characterizes
him: «I am afraid of the affection of this Cain» [6, 502]. That is, it becomes clear that
lieutenant colonel is the creator of evil. We see clearly his treachery in dialogue with
Mariya: «Is it not harder to know that because of your moral purity, your loved ones
are suffering and dying of your selfishness? ... It is perhaps more reasonable to take on
yourself a small, almost innocent sin and thus deprive yourself of suffering, illness,
death and great sins?» [6, 508]. And as a result, the woman gives in his talk about
sacrifice and altruism and dares to commit a sin against their comrades. Ultimately,
Stalynskyy frankly declares to Mariya and her supporters: «Not only life, but your
death in my hands. ... It is good that you are opposed to yours, and I am opposed to
enemies.
You betrayed everyone <...> This is the greatest crime among people» [6,
526]. Gendarme has his own (even if they completely opposite to universal)
interpretation of the concept of «good» and «evil». Playing on the feelings of
selflessness and caring of Mary about others, on the needs of self-assertion and
ambition, Stalynskyy completely disoriented her: «Yes, If I were you, I would have
had the world. <...> But be above all sorts of betrayals, above all kinds of people. What
are they to you, these people? Thousands of people are waiting for you to manage
them, reign over them»[6, 531]. And when a woman suffers from the fact that she
back
the wrong horse, he states his victory with such a remark: «...but in this your own
torment is my power over you»[6, 526]. Moreover, Stalynskyy cynically states that he
«is only interested in it only from psychological aspect» [6, 527]. And he admits that
in all of this «there is something satanic» [6, 532]. Gendarme Stalynskyy is not just
evil – he is a real demon. But he does all his treacherous and frank rage as a noble and
supposedly charitable desire to save a whole society and even humanity from
revolutionaries.
And, perhaps, his greatest sin is that he destroys himself the most
notorious personality - the very essence of. He puts all this on the altar of inhuman
duty.
