Two species have a great significance in this region – amaranth weevil (Lixus
subtilis) and
black bean aphid
(Aphis fabae), in some years turnip moth caterpillars
(Agrotis segetum), Miridae and Cicadellidae.
Some phytophagous insects, which are not associated trophically with amaranth,
use it for maturation feeding by pollen and are solitary, therefore amaranth can not be
considered as a cause of increase the populations of other crop pests.
Amaranth attracts many predators, parasitoids and insect pollinators, which use
amaranth pollen for maturation feeding and thus, contribute to an increase in the
species composition and density of beneficial insects in agrocenoses.
