ORGANIC PRODUCTION – COMPETITIVE PERSPECTIVE FOR
AGRARIES
Introduction. There is a steady increase in demand for organic products in the
world. According to Swiss experts, the market for organic products in the world is about
$ 90 billion. The dynamic development of organic agriculture in the world is mainly
due to increased demand for organic products on the world agro-food market, where the
capacity of the organic segment grows five times faster than the global market in
general. According to experts' forecasts, in 2020 the volume of world trade in organic
agri-food can reach 200-250 billion dollars of USA. More than 2 million farms are
engaged in ecological production in the world. Compared with 1999, the area of land
allocated for organic agriculture in the world has increased more than three times.
Comparing the amount of organic land in Europe and Ukraine, obvious that our
country is still at the beginning. Today in Ukraine, only 1% of agricultural land or more
than 400 thousand hectares of land is occupied by organic production. According to
Eurostat, in the EU, more than 11 million hectares of land and more than 270 thousand
farms are certified in organic farming, and the land fund employed for organic
production has increased from 2010 to 2015 by 2 million hectares or by 21%. Europe
concentrates 29% of organic agricultural area around the world. Countries with the
largest area of organic agricultural land are Spain (1.6 million hectares), Italy (1.1
million hectares) and Germany (1 million hectares). The largest market for organic
products with a trade turnover of 6.6 billion euros is located in Germany, followed by
France (3.8 billion euros) and Great Britain (1.9 billion euros) [1].
According to the Swiss-Ukrainian project "FIBL" Ukraine ranks 11th among the
European countries for the production of organic products, and the 5th - for the increase
of organic production. By 2020, the country can become one of the five largest organic
producers in the world [2].
Ukrainians consume much less organic food than residents of EU countries. This
indicator is € 3 per capita, while in the EU - € 53.7. In terms of the internal market for
