was Odessa's turn to open a science temple not only for the southern edge The Empire.
An interesting connection can be traced to the formation of a legal education in
Odessa with the opening in 1865 of the Imperial Novorossiysk University. It coincided
with the main milestone in the history of development and formation, including the
Odessa Bar Association as an institution of sworn attorneys, which was also started in
1865 with the approval of the Regulations on the Implementation of the Judicial
Charters.
It should be noted that until the end of the 18th century. Moscow University
remained the only educational institution in Russia, which trained specialists in the
field of law.
It should be emphasized that no scientific research has been devoted to the
formation of professional skills of sworn attorneys through legal education. Studies in
the field of professional activity of sworn attorneys at the turn of the 19-20 century
dealt with Yu.F. Lyubshev "Advocacy in Russia", I.V. Hessen "The History of the
Russian Advocacy" (in the provision of materials of which Odessa attorney Y.E.
Lieberman participated), I.I. Bazhenova "Advocacy in pre-revolutionary Russia, the
second half of the XIX - beginning of the XX century", V.V. Tsoi "The formation and
development of the legal profession in Russia in the period from 1864 to 1914: the
historical and legal aspect", A.V. Gavrilova "Formation and development of the
Institute of Advocacy in Western Siberia in the period of development and
implementation of judicial reform of the 60s of the XIX century", I.N. Black
"Advocacy as an institution for the protection of individual rights and freedoms
(historical and legal study)" and others. Of particular value are the books of Sergei
Yemtsa "The Advocacy of Odessa for 100 Years", "The Odessa Chartered Attorneys".
But unfortunately these works do not give an idea of the professional legal education
that the famous attorneys known for their mastery and originality of thinking received.
Of course, the curriculum of the Faculty of Law was not created on an equal
footing. We used both domestic and foreign teaching experience. So in the curriculum
of 1-2 courses were widely presented the "History of Roman Law", "The Dogma of
Roman Law", "The Roman Law System", "The History of Byzantine Law". As we see
the issues of Roman law were given a fairly large amount of teaching hours, which
makes it possible to assert that, with their fundamental knowledge of the foundations
of jurisprudence formed within the framework of the Romano-Germanic system of law,
coryphae from among the sworn advocates trained in the walls of the Imperial
Novorossiysk University namely the skillful implementation, adaptation and reception
in the curriculum of the foundations of Roman private law.
A striking confirmation of this fact is the graduate of the 1890 Imperial
Novorossiysk University Osip Yakovlevich Pergament who graduated from an
educational institution with a first degree diploma and was left at the Imperial
