Introduction.
Lviv – one of the largest city centers of the Galician-Volhynian
state, the Polish crown, and subsequently the Rzeczpospolita, due to its special
geopolitical location, became a place where the development of the military and
defensive trade reached its climax. The study of the military history sources plays an
important role in general source studies. Against this background, the era of the late
Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age, with its continuous wars and controversial
sources, is particularly distinguished. Due to the considerable source base, the history of
Lviv became the subject of many studies. In particular, the military art in Lviv and the
problems of city defense were investigated.
The analysis and classification of the full complex of historical sources, namely,
the documents created as a result of the activity of the Lviv magistrate, the Royal
Chancellery, will influence further development of theoretical and methodological
issues of source studies, will allow to highlight all functions and information capabilities
of archival sources in military art and the development of the defense system of Lviv in
the second half of the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. It should be noted that a
comprehensive study of archival sources on the military art in Lviv of the second half of
the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries has not yet been conducted.
Formulation of the problem and its relevance. The reference to Lviv as a military
and defense center occupied a significant place in the documentary communication of
the various monarchs of the Polish Crown, and subsequently the Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth. The royal authorities needed the city to be well-fortified, and in the
time of the enemy attack could withstand the siege. City privileges granted by
monarchs at different times are the main source of research of the policy of kings on
strengthening the city's defense capability. The relevance of the topic is determined by
the study of the privileges information structure granted by the Jagiellonian dynasty,
which will enable the historian-researcher to trace what functions the document had
and for what purpose it was created. This will allow us to construct an information
process that took place in the walls of the city of Lviv at the time of its creation and
pre-source existence.
