significant contributions to the study of indigenous educational processes and the
development of promising directions for their development are carried out by
governmental organizations at the federal, provincial, and local levels as well as by
public organizations engaged in studying the education of Indigenous people and
individual national groups.
The specifics of the conceptual and categorical framework of the study are
analyzed, including the analysis of the following concepts: "Indigenous peoples",
"Aboriginal people", "Aboriginal", "Native peoples", "First Nations", "band". It has
been established that, according to anthropological characteristics, three main groups
of Indigenous peoples live in Canada (Indians - Indigenous inhabitants of the central
and southern territories of the country, Inuit - Indigenous peoples of the northern
territories of the country, Metis - a separate nation of Indigenous peoples, which
appeared as a result of mixed marriages of Europeans with Indians). The criteria are
specified to define Indigenous peoples. The ethical principles of the terminology use
are considered, as well as the Indigenous peoples categories in Canada, which are
distinguished according to the legal status (Status Indians, Non-status Indians and
Treaty Indians), defined by the main state laws (British North American Act of 1867,
the Law about the Indians of 1876 and the Constitutional Act of 1982). It was found
that the diversification of Indigenous population in Canada depends on the area of
residence (indigenous peoples living on and off reserve).
Taking into account the significant scientific advances on the fundamental
questions of the methodology of the history of pedagogy and foreign pedagogy, the
study of the development of indigenous education in Canada justifies the use of a set
of
methodological
approaches
(systemic,
structural-functional,
historical-
chronological, functional, comparative, multicultural, culturological, constructivist,
anthropological , acmeological, axiological).
