with a specific set of heroes’ motifs that are found in a different relationship of the
cultural and social nature, and many other factors. As the author himself, the same the
heroes of the novel express their attitude to the action, which is happening to its
members [26].
The means of cohesion in the text are classified into the following types:
traditionally grammatical performing text-formation function, logical associative
(subtext), image, composition-structural, stylistic, and rhythm-creating [17, 27].
Depending on the type of actualized by the communicants information, the
following
types
of
cohesion
are
distinguished:
grammatical,
semantic,
onomasiological, logic, image, connotative, structural and compositional, topical [27,
25].
After M. А. K. Halliday, we believe that the relations of cohesion are a relation
between two or more elements in the text, regardless of the structures [23].
The category of integrity, which is sometimes called “coherence”, is usually
opposed to the category of cohesion [28]. According to Lyons, the differences between
the cohesion and the coherence are identical to the differences in form and content [29].
Cohesion is the relation of the elements of the text, when the one are dependent
on the other [17]. Coherence is the relation that is brought with something external in
relation to the text, first of all with the knowledge of its addressee. Based on the
knowledge the addressee can construct certain expectations and finish up the relation
that is not expressed explicitly in the text [6].
As the study of the literary tests shows, not all author`s digressions are not-
integrated; many of them are related to the text using the cohesion.
Let us consider the digressions that are expressed with the part of the sentence.
The following author`s digressions are characterized by integration in the general story,
because the author`s digression is only a part of a sentence that is grammatically linked
with all sentences, as well as the existing logical and lexical types of coherence between
the author`s digression and the text of the main story. The example of the convergent
author`s digression that is expressed with the part of the sentence is a fragment of the
text from the novel by Kipling “The Light That Failed”:
Since the human soul is finite and not in the least under its own command, Dick,
advancing, said, “Halloo”! After the manner of schoolboys, and Maisie answered, 'Oh,
Dick! [30].
We believe that this author`s digression is integrated because the author`s
digression is expressed as a part of the complex sentence, as well as the existing logical
connection of the author`s digression with the text of the main story. This author`s
digression could not be removed out of context, because the sense is lost.
Relation of the author`s digression with the text can be grammatical, semantic,
and associative.
